Greetings from Canada.

Newline

The code for the pages behaves rather like html, so to start a new line you either have to make sure there is an empty line inbetween, or add a <br> to the end of the line.

enclose parts of the text, that shouldn't be treated as html or styling code, with the nowiki marker:
<nowiki> test <br> </nowiki>

Adding links:

add external links by enclosing the address with square brackets [ ], which then looks like this [2]. Don't forget the http://

To create an internal link you have to enclose the name with double square brackets [[ ]]
If the name of that page already exists, it links to that page. If it doesn't exist yet this new page is created and by clicking on it you can add new data to the new page.

With English links the first letter is case insensitve, internally it gets stored with a capital letter, but when referencing use the form according to the general spelling rules. Unfortunately this doesn't work with other alphabets, e.g. Cyrillic, here the link is case sensitive. We recommend creating the link according to general spelling rules, and then making the link appear differently if necessary, e.g. at the beginning of a sentence.

To make a link appear differently, use this format: [[Main Page|to the main page]]
It will appear as: to the main page

not-yet-existing page does exist

Looks like everything works now... *crossing fingers*

And even this kind of link works perfectly:

Saaropean likes the different link colors in the new Wiki:

  • light blue (external links)
  • blue (internal links not visited yet)
  • purple (visited internal links)
  • red (non-existing internal pages)

The only thing missing now is wiki.png, the logo that links to the main page...

I have a suggestion for the design of the Main Page:
The 4 sections general ressources, general grammar, multilingual resources and languages should be emphasized somehow. Instead of just writing them in a different way (bigger font, maybe bold and/or italic), we could have images for those links, maybe even MediaGlyphs. What do you guys think?

geoff: btw, it is also possible to discuss certain pages directly, by clicking on "discuss this page" :-)

Saaropean: Wasn't it you who suggested me to post this here? ;-)

---

Looks better now...

DoWeStillHaveWordsSmashedTogether ?

Saaropean: No! Now we have links in the form of "Greek alphabet", "translations: I love you" or simply "adjective". :-)
To place such a link, simply put it in double brackets: [[multilingual resources]]

I just discovered a new feature (at least for me):
by writing --~~~~ in the edit page it creates User name and timestamp, it is a signature function. --Geoff 22:57, 5 Feb 2004 (EST)

A few feminine nouns end in -o*s. The conjugation of these is equal to masculine nouns in -o*s, but be careful to use feminine articles and adjectives when applicable.

specifying fonts. Is this OK ?

Microsoft IE seems choose a default font in this wiki that's horrible for arabic (tiny illegible letters). Here are some tests :

  • the markup: == example. ك?تَبٌ ==gives:

example. ك?تَبٌ

horrible, doesn't show up well at all on my browser. How about yours?

  • normal font gives: book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ
  • book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ

Here's the code: <div style="font-size:XX-Large;font-family:monospace;"> book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ</div>

  • book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ
  • book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ
  • book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ
  • book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ
  • book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ
  • book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ
  • book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ

My favorite is
book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ
which has the markup: <div style="font-size:XX-Large;font-family:monospace;"> book ك?تَبٌ - books ك?ت?بٌ</div>

Of course, it depends on how IE's configured as well...
question:

  • problem with the <div> tag is it creates a new line, and the "span" tag doesn't seem to work here. So: how do I switch fonts without a newline?

some other questions on my page. Cheers.

Pistolero Tests the Span Tag for Arabic I changed the size, and instead of displaying it with a sans-serif or monospaced font, I switched it to a more pleasing and easy to read serif font, the same should be done to Hebrew since the monospace or sans-serif one looks rather blocky and is hard to read for beginners. Here is the code I used: <span style="font-size:xx-large;font-family:Traditional Arabic,serif;">TEXT</span>

َانَتْ رِيْحُ الشَّمَالِ تَتَجَادَلُ مَعَ الشَّمْسِ فِيْ أَيٍّ مِنْهُمَا كَانَتْ أَقْوَى مِنْ الأُخْرَى، وَإِذْ بِمُسَافِرٍ

Psi-Lord 21:00, 7 May 2005 (CEST): Although it's deprecated, you can probably still use the <font> tag (with the face attribute) in order to change the fonts without creating a new paragraph, since the <span> tag won't work on the Wiki:

This sentence should start with Courier New, change to Arial Black, change to Comic Sans MS, and end as Georgia.

A pity the support for voweled Arabic is a bit messy—if you try and play with the font size, it seems the characters start running over one another between consecutive lines in the same paragraph… Well, actually, when you mess with the size, it seems that even unvocalised Arabic gets a bit confusing.

Psi-Lord 15:17, 8 May 2005 (CEST): Testing Khmer on the Wiki:

‎សួស្ដី‎

‎ចំការ ?ៀវ ប្ដី ព្រះសង្ឃ‎

test

This is what the text above should look like if displayed correctly (using the Khmer OS font in my example):

khmertest0011sd.png

Psi-Lord 06:28, 9 Jun 2005 (CEST): Testing Tibetan display:

རི་མགོ་ན་ཉལ་ན་དཀའ?

Apparently it shows the same problems displaying Arabic does—two consecutive lines will run over each other, especially when using bigger sizes. The font I use on my system for Tibetan is Tibetan Machine Uni, by the way
