Tajiki

The Tajiki language (тоҷикӣ) is a variant of the Persian language, written in the Cyrillic alphabet and official language of the Republic of Tajikistan. Tajik used to be written in the arabic alphabet (farsi variant) until the 1920s when several script reform attemps were made. It then was written in the Latin alphabet, but only for about 10 years. In 1940 an alphabet based on the Russian Cyrillic variant was accepted. The alphabet has got letters.

Grammar

Personal pronouns

Tajiki personal pronouns
Person Singular Plural
first man (I) mo (we)
second tu (you) shumo (you)
third üü, vay (he/she) onho (they)

formalities

When speaking about someone you respect a lot you always use the plural form. It's a bit like Pluralis majestatis. You also do this when speaking about persons in the narrative perspective. Like, you would speak about a very famous writer you would speak about him as of a "they" in Tajiki.

Possesive determiners

In Tajiki Persian the inflectional suffix "izofat" - "-i" is used to show possesive relationship between words. The -i is added to the possesed word.

Examples:

Düst'i' man -> my friend
Düst'i' tu -> your friend
Düst'i' ü / vay -> his / her friend
Düst'i' mo -> our friend
Düst'i' shumo -> your friend
Düst'i' onho -> their friend

!! The izofat is pronounced "i" after consonants but "yi" after vowels. !!

Stress

In all Tajiki words, except for verbs, stress falls on the last syllable.
If a suffix is added to the word, the stress falls on it.

In Tajiki verbs stress usually falls on the first syllable:
гирифтам /'giriftam/(I took)
фурӯхтӣ /'furükhtii/ (you sold)
