All nouns in Swahili belong to classes. Classes are like gender in other languages, except there are seventeen classes of nouns.
[edit]
Classes 1-2
These classes represent animate beings, especially people. Class 1 is the singular, beginning with m- or mw-/mu-. Class 2 is the equivalent plural: the m- is replaced by wa-.
Example: mtoto 'child' > watoto 'children'.
[edit]
Classes 3-4
These classes often represent plants. Here, the singular is m- or mu-, and the plural is mi-.
