A suffix is an affix that is used to suffix (to put behind) a root word.

For example:

In the English word

(1) freedom

-dom is a nominal suffix to the adjective root word 'free'.


In the Esperanto word

helpema (accommodating, helpful)

-em- is a suffix that indicates an affinity to the root 'help'.
