Spanish: Articles

From UniLang Wiki

While english has only two articles, "the" and "a/an", spanish articles have to agree with the gender and number of the noun they go with:

  • definite, singular, masculine: the - el
  • definite, singular, feminine: the - la
  • definite, plural, masculine: the - los
  • definite, plural, feminine: the - las
  • indefinite, singular, masculine: a - un
  • indefinite, singular, feminine: a - una
  • indefinite, plural, masculine: (some) - unos
  • indefinite, plural, feminine: (some) - unas

In English there is no indefinite article, one says "a house" and the plural would just be "houses". In spanish however there is a plural indefinite article as well, it could be translated by "some" for clarity, but should usually be left untranslated:

Example:

  • El perro = The dog
  • La casa = The house
  • Un perro = A dog
  • Una casa = A house
  • Los perros = The dogs
  • Las casas = The houses
  • Unos perros = dogs
  • Unas casas = houses
