Sorbian

From UniLang Wiki

Sorbian is spoken in Silesia (de. "Schlesien", pl. "Śląsk") and Lusatia (dt. "Lausitz") by a minority with slavic roots. It belongs to the Western Slavonic languages and has many similarities with Polish and Czech. The Polish population of the Sorbs has been absorbed by the Polish majority, whereas they enjoy minority rights in Germany. Because the area of the Sorbs is nowaday limited to the very (south) eastern Germany, I have to use some German words to describe where no English word exists.

Sorbian is made up of two dialects: Lower Sorbian and Upper Sorbian.

Lower Sorbian (dt. "Niedersorbisch") is spoken in the region of Cottbus (Germany) and sometimes called "Wendisch" (German word!), whereas Upper Sorbian (dt. "Obersorbisch") is spoken in the region of Bautzen (~80km south to Cottbus).

Please note, that the "Wenden" (German word, from "Wendisch") do not like to be mixed up with the Sorbs (usually only used by Upper Sorbs to describe themselves), although the language is called Lower Sorbian.

Sadly I only know people from the Lower Sorbian population and have no Sorbian roots myself. I am trying to learn it by myself just by adopting the knowledge from Polish to Sorbian ;)
