Pronunciation of acronyms

Acronyms in Serbian can be pronounced in several ways.

1) Unabbreviated acronyms: acronyms which must be pronounced in their full meaning:

OŠ [osnovna škola] - osnovna škola
LMS [letopis Matice srpske] - Letopis Matice srpske

2) Letter-by-letter pronunciation

a) "Cyrillic" pronunciation of letters:

GSP [g-s-p] - Gradsko Saobraćajno Preduzeće
SRJ [s-r-j] - Savezna Republika Jugoslavija

b) Pronunciation using the names of the Latin letters

PTT [pe-te-te] - Pošta-Telefon-Telegraf
TV [te-ve] - Televizija
MMF [em-em-ef

• Sometimes letters whose names begin in e- (like m or f) change their pronunciation because otherwise it would be difficult to pronounce them.
  

VMA [ve-me-a] - Vojnomedicinska akademija

c) some foreign acronyms are pronounced as they are pronounced in the original language

BBC [bi-bi-si]
CNN [si-en-en]
FBI [ef-bi-aj]

• Whether the acronym is written in Cyrillic or Latin won't affect it's pronunciation. ГСП/GSP is always pronounced [g-s-p] and ПТТ/PTT is always pronounced as [pe-te-te]
