Scots Gaelic

What is it?

Scots Gaelic is a Celtic language of the Gaelic branch spoken in parts of Scotland. Originally the language of the Scotti that founded Scotland, Gaelic once enjoyed status as the main national language. Over time however the Anglic language Inglis, now called Scots, came to be seen as more prestigeous by many and Gaelic began losing ground. Today there are approximately 60,000 speakers of Gaelic in Scotland, mainly in the Hebrides, Highlands, and Argyll regions. There have also been many speakers in Nova Scotia, Canada, and it continues to be spoken there by some today.
