Russian has a large number of native speakers all over the world, the largest among Slavic languages, and is one of the six official languages of the UN.
It is the eighth in the world for the number of native speakers, the fifth for the number of those who speak it fluently and the ninth most popular language of the Internet. It is widespread not only in Russia and the former Soviet Union, but also in Israel, Canada, Germany and other countries. It is one of the most studied languages in the world. Russian originates from the Old Russian language of the XIV-XV centuries which has also given birth to Ukrainian and Belorussian.
