Retroflex

A retroflex consonant is a consonant in which the tip of the tongue is curled back and touching the palate.

In IPA retroflex consonants are marked with a little hook, e.g.: É– ɳ Ê‚ Ê? É» É­ ʈ ɽ.

Several Indian languages have retroflex plosives, fricatives and nasals as phonemes: Hindi and Sanskrit ट� ṭ [ʈ], ठ� ṭh [ʈʰ], ड� � [ɖ], ढ� �h [ɖʰ], ष� ṣ [ʂ], ण� ṇ [ɳ]. Other languages may have retroflex allophones, for instance clusters with initial r in Swedish: rt [ʈ], rd [ɖ], rs [ʂ]...
