Brazilian Portuguese IRC Language

Brazilian IRC users, just like those of any other languages that use accents and diacritics, tend to get rid of these accents and diacritics, either because they are unable to type them for any technical reason or because they want to type faster. The spelling also tends to follow the spoken language.

How to replace accent marks and other diacritics

Til (~)

ão is typed aum -> naum (não), saum (são), irmaum (irmão) ãos is typed auns (as you can't spell "m" before "s") õe is typed õe (no "til") ãe is typed ãe (no "til")

Acute accent (´)

The acute accent, when placed at the end of a word, is usually replaced by a h following the vowel. In other cases it is simply omitted.

eh (é), soh (só), cafeh (café)

Circumflex accent (^)

This one may be typed or omitted.

Cedilha (ç)

Three things may happen and are all quite common. Let's see an example with the word coração:

  • One may just omit the cedilha and type a plain c: coracaum
  • One may type the cedilha: coraçaum
  • One may replace the cedilha with ss: corassaum

Other spelling changes

Diphthong "ou"

Sometimes spelt "ow" when at the end of a word: sow (sou), falow (falou)

Replacing syllables with letters and numbers

As in English, syllables may also be replaced by letters and numbers whose names sounds like these syllables: c can be "cê" (short form of "você"), and 6 can be "cês" (short form of "vocês"), although writing vc for "você" and vcs for "vocês" is much more common; 1 may replace any pronoun ending in "um", although it usually just replaces the word "um" itself; v may be used for "vê" and "ver"; q replaces "que"; k replaces "ca", and in the word "cá"; kd often replaces "cadê", as in "kd vc?".
