Persian adjectives
From UniLang Wiki
Attributive adjectives in Persian, as a rule, come after the noun they qualify; as nouns, they distinguish no gender, but they distinguish no number either, i.e. they have no singular / plural different forms. The combination noun + adjective requires an اضاÙ?Ù‡ [ezâfe] construction.
| خوب | xub | good, nice |
| کتاب | ketâb | book |
| کتاب خوب | ketâbe xub | good book |
| کتابها خوب | ketâbhâye xub | good books |
More than one adjective can be used to qualify a noun:
| کتاب خوب گران | ketâbe xube gerân | expensive, good book |
When the indefinite suffix ـی [-i] is to be used, it is tagged to the last noun or adjective:
| هتل بزرگ | hotele bozorg | (the) big hotel |
| هتل بزرگی | hotele bozorgi | a big hotel |
| هتل بزرگ گرانی | hotele bozorge gerâni | an expensive, big hotel |
Comparative Degree
To form the comparative degree of the adjectives, just tag the suffix ـتر [-tar] to the adjective:
| گران‌تر | gerântar | more expensive |
| هتل بزرگ‌تر | hotele bozorgtar | (the) bigger hotel |
The suffix ـتر can be written united to or separate from the adjective, so that e.g. گران‌تر = گرانتر.
When comparing two nouns, the basic structure is NOUN1 + از [az] + NOUN2 + ADJECTIVE + verb:
| این کتاب از آن کتاب گران‌تر است | in ketâb az ân ketâb gerântar ast | this book is more expensive than that book |
Superlative Degree
To form the superlative degree of the adjectives, just tag the suffix ـترین [-tarin] to the adjective:
| گران‌ترین | gerântarin | the most expensive |
The suffix ـترین can also be written united to or separate from the adjective, so that e.g. گران‌ترین = گرانترین.
Superlative adjectives, contrarily to ordinary and comparative adjectives, come before the noun they qualify and don't use اضاÙ?Ù‡:
| بزرگ‌ترین هتل | bozorgtarin hotel | the biggest hotel |
Demonstrative adjectives
Persian has two demonstrative adjectives:
| این | in | this, these (object near the speaker) |
| آن | ân | that, those (object away from the speaker) |
Like any adjectives, they reflect neither gender nor number, and, like superlative adjectives, they appear before the noun they qualify:
| این هتل | in hotel | this hotel |
| آن ماشین‌ها | ân mâshinhâ | those cars |
| این کتاب جوب | in ketâbe hub | this good book |
