Egeneto anthropos = there was (a) man
apestalmenos para Theou, = sent by God,
onoma auto Ioannees = name to him John

[Houtos eelthen eis martyrian, ina martyreesee peri tou photos, ina pantes pisteusousi di’ autou.]

Houtos eelthen eis martyrian, = This (he) came to witness
ina martyreesee peri tou photos, = (in order) to bear witness about the light
ina pantes pisteusousi di’ autou. = (in order) to everybody believe through him

8. Ουκ ην εκεινος το φως, αλλ’ ινα μαÏ?Ï„Ï…Ï?ηση πεÏ?ι του φωτος
[Ouk een ekeinos to phos, all’ ina martyreesee peri tou photos]

Ouk een ekeinos to phos, = not was that (he) the light
all’ ina martyreesee peri tou photos = but (in order) to bear witness about the light

9. Ην το φως το αληθινον, ο φωτιζει παντα ανθÏ?ωπον εÏ?χομενον εις τον κοσμον
[Een to phos to aleethinon, ho photizei panta anthropon erchomenon eis ton kosmon]

Een to phos to aleethinon, = was the light the true
ho photizei panta anthropon = that shines (on) every man
erchomenon eis ton kosmon = coming in(to) the world

10. Εν τω κοσμω ην, και ο κοσμος δι’ αυτου εγενετο, και ο κοσμος αυτον ουκ εγνω
[En to kosmo een, kai o kosmos di’ autou egeneto, kai o kosmos auton ouk egno]

En to kosmo een = In the world was (he)
kai o kosmos di’ autou egeneto, = and the world through him was made
kai o kosmos auton ouk egno = and the world him not knew
