North Frisian

From UniLang Wiki

In early times Frisians must have migrated hundreds of kilometers to the north into the danish realm. They are thought to have come in two waves: at first to the islands like Sylt and Föhr (and to the rock island Helgoland) around 700 A.D. and then around 1200 A.D. to the facing mainland.

Today this North Frisian is presented in four insular and about six continental dialects, all very different. Altogether the number of speakers does not exceed 10,000!
Continental North Frisian is most related to Sater Frisian.

Some of the dialects have a literature and are educated since the beginning of the last century.

An on-line course in North Frisian (Mooring) can temporarely be found at [[1]].
