Middle

The middle is a voice-form of the verb, contrasting with the active and passive, which is found in a few languages: Sanskrit, Classical Greek, Fula (West Africa). It is used for actions which agents do to or for themselves, as in the Greek
phainetai he shows himself, he appears
luetai khiton he washes himself a shirt

Some verbs, expressing mental or bodily actions, only occur in the middle: Greek oiomai I think, hallomai I jump; the same situation is found in Fula.
