History

Manx (Manx: Gaelg, IPA /gɪlg/ is a Celtic language of the Goidelic group, which also includes Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic. All three languages descended from Old Irish, and Gaelic branched from Irish in the thirteenth century AD. In the fifteenth century, Manx branched from Gaelic. Manx is spoken on the Isle of Man, situated in the Irish Sea between Ireland and Britain. It closely related to Irish and Scottish and more distantly related to Welsh, Cornish, and Breton. The popularity of the language waned drastically at the end of the nineteenth century and the last two native speakers died in the 1970s.

New native speakers of Manx have begun to appear, thanks to Manx-language schools and Manx-speaking parents.
