Malay grammar

From UniLang Wiki

There won't be much grammar in the initial stage. I will present examples using sentences that will highlight all the necessary requirements to make your knowledge of Malay remarkable.

Tenses

Think of Malay as something that's totally different from what you had learned of other languages regarding tenses. To indicate time, Malay just add in a few words in the sentences without changing the verb forms.

  • Saya sudah makan. I have eaten
  • Saya belum makan. I have not yet eaten
  • Saya sedang makan. I am eating
  • Saya akan makan. I will eat

These words sudah, belum, sedang, and akan have to be memorized besides knowing where to put in a sentence. Observe the following dialogues for usage of the above:

  • Ahmad: Bilakah kamu akan bayar kesemua hutang kamu?
  • Ahmad: When are you going to settle all your loans
  • Daud : Ah! jangan bimbanglah! Besok pagi aku bayarlah!
  • Daud : Ah! don't you worry! Tomorrow morning I will pay

to be continued soon
