The Malay Sentence

To simplify things, let's get to know the two main type of sentences. Basic sentences and derived sentences. Basic sentences examples:

1. Ahmad membeli buku itu

   Ahmad bought the book.

2. Pelajar yang baru itu sedang membaca buku.

The new student is reading a book.

3. Mereka pergi ke sekolah.

   They went to school .

The next sentence format, derived sentence is created due to rearrrangement or modification of the basic sentence. Take the examples above:

a. Ahmad membeli buku itu.

  Buku itu dibeli oleh Ahmad.
The book was bought by Ahmad. From active to passive.

b. Pelajar yang baru itu sedang membaca buku.

  Pelajar itu sedang membaca buku.
The student is reading a book Deletion of baru.

Since Malay lacks gender and other grammatical declensions, the mastery of such transformational constructs is a great leap in achieving proficiency. Next: More on sentences
