Malagasy

Malagasy is the one of the two official languages, and the national language of, Madagascar. It is made up of several dialects, of which Merina is the dominant and the basis for the standard language.

Malagasy is in the Malayo-Polynesian language family, and is thus related to everything from Bahasa (Indonesian/Malaysian) to Tagalog/Pilipino to Hawai'ian to Maori; geographically it is the westernmost member of this family. Malagasy itself has been influenced mainly by French, Arabic and Swahili, but also more recently by English.
