五段動詞 [godandoushi], meaning "Step 5 verbs", are verbs belonging to a group whose inflection has 5 vowels(a,i,u,e,o) in the inflection of itself.

For example:

  • 話? (hanasu)
  • 書?? (kaku)
  • 見る (miru)
  • ??? (kiku)

The other big group of verbs is called 一段動詞 (ichidandoushi), "Step 1 verbs".
