To Have
This verb, avere (derived from Lat. habere), is a very active verb within the Italian language. It not only has a substantive meaning, "to have", but also functions as an auxiliary verb, forming compound tenses of most transitive verbs (i.e. verbs that take a direct object).
The easiest way to present this verb is with a table of the forms, followed by notes:
Note: the pronouns "egli" (s. m.), "ella" (s.f.) and "essi" (p.n), "esse" (p.f) are used as subject.
"lui" (s.m.) , "lei" (f.s.) and "loro" (p. m./f.) are used as complement. In a non formal context they can be used as subject.
"Lei" (sing.) and "Loro" (pl.) are respect form for "egli"/"ella" and "essi".
