IPA: ɲ

The consonant [ɲ] is palatal because the hard palate is the target of the tongue body. It’s a nasal because the soft palate is lowered to a greater or lesser extent, allowing a portion of the airstream to pass through the nasal cavity. It's similar to onion.
It is written in different ways – in:

* Catalan, Hungarian, Indonesian, Malay, Swahili as ny,
* Breton, French, Italian as gn,
* Portuguese*, Occitan as nh,

* Faroese as nj and as n + affricate (nk(j), ng(j)),
* Polish as ń,
* Latvian as ņ,
* Tamil as ஞ,
* Burmese as

* Amharic as
,
* Russian as нь.
