German introduction

German is a West Germanic language
spoken by about 100 million people in central Europe.
Its closest relatives are Dutch (and with it Afrikaans), Low Saxon, Yiddish, and Luxembourgish. Frisian and especially English are further away.
German is an official language in Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein,
Switzerland (native for about 60% of the population),
Belgium (spoken in the very east) as well as parts of Italy (South Tyrol = Südtirol = Alto Adige) and the very south of Denmark.
