German 'to put'

Before going into the details of how to translate the verb to put, look at the various ways to describe the location of an object:

  • hängen = to be hanging (partly attached to something, partly free in the air)
    • Reiners Mantel hängt an der Garderobe / über dem Bett / neben der Tür / im Schrank / unter dem Dach
    • = Reiner's jacket is hanging on the wardrobe / over the bed / beside the door / in the closet / under the roof
  • liegen = to be lying (with the whole body on something)
    • Lisa liegt auf dem Bett / am Strand / in der Badewanne / unter Palmen
    • = Lisa is lying on the bed / at the beach / in the bathtub / under palm trees
  • sitzen = to be sitting (with the bottom on something)
    • Tanja sitzt auf ihrem Stuhl / am Tisch / im Haus / unter dem Dach / im Gefängnis
    • = Tanja is sitting on her chair / at the table / in the house / under the roof / in jail
  • stehen = to be standing (upright, with the feet on something)
    • Uwe steht auf der Decke / an der Bar / in der Schlange / unter dem Dach
    • = Uwe is standing on the blanket / at the bar / in a queue / under the roof
    • Im Buch / In der Zeitung steht ein interessanter Artikel / steht, dass...
    • = There is an interesting article in the book / newspaper
    • Im Buch / In der Zeitung steht, dass...
    • = The book / newspaper says...

In colloquial German, sein can be used as an indefinite way to describe a location:

Gisela ist auf dem Stuhl / im Bett / in der Schlange / im Haus
= Gisela is (sitting?) on the chair / (lying?) in the bed / (standing?) in the queue / in the house

The various verbs for to put are based on the same principles. In opposite to their locational counterparts, they are conjugated regularly, and they require accusative case after prepositions. Those verbs are either transitive (with an accusative object) or reflexive.

  • hängen = to attach so that it hangs partly free in the air
    • Reiner hängt seinen Mantel an die Garderobe / über das Bett / neben die Tür / in den Schrank / unter das Dach
    • = Reiner puts his jacket on the wardrobe / over the bed / beside the door / in the closet / under the roof
    • Reiner hängt sich an den Galgen / hängt sich auf / erhängt sich
    • = Reiner hangs himself on the gallows / hangs himself
  • legen = to lay down (with the whole body on something)
    • Lisa legt ihr Buch auf das Bett / an den Strand / in die Badewanne / unter Palmen
    • = Lisa puts her book on the bed / on the beach / in the bathtub / under palm trees
    • Lisa legt sich auf das Bett / an den Strand / in die Badewanne / unter Palmen / legt sich hin
    • = Lisa lays down on the bed / at the beach / in the bathtub / under palm trees / lays down
  • setzen = to set (with the bottom on something)
    • Tanja setzt das Baby auf seinen Stuhl / an den Tisch / ins Haus / unter das Dach
    • = Tanja puts the baby on its chair / at the table / in the house / under the roof
    • Tanja setzt Blumen
    • = Tanja plants / beds out flowers
    • Tanja setzt 5 Euro auf rot
    • = Tanja sets 5 euro on red
    • Tanja setzt sich auf ihren Stuhl / an den Tisch / ins Haus / unter das Dach / setzt sich hin
    • = Tanja sits down on her chair / at the table / in the house / under the roof / sits down
  • stellen = to put upright, with the feet on something
    • Uwe stellt das Glas auf den Tisch / an die Wand / in den Schrank / unter die Decke
    • = Uwe puts the glass on the table / close to the wall / in the cupboard / under the blanket
    • Uwe stellt sich auf die Decke / an die Bar / in die Schlange / unter das Dach / stellt sich hin
    • = Uwe goes on the blanket / to the bar / in the queue / under the roof / stands up
    • Uwe stellt eine Frage / einen Antrag
    • = Uwe asks a question / makes an application

There is no indefinite way combining all four that functions like sein for the location, so you have to get familiar with the distinctions...
