German: how to talk about movies

Movies tend to be more or less international nowadays, so they are great topics to talk with someone while learning a language. Here are some phrases for getting you started.

In front of the cinema

Well, before we can talk about movies, we have to see one, right? So, off to the cinema...

"Hallo, zwei Karten für 'Krieg der Sterne' um 20 Uhr, bitte." = "Hello, two tickets for 'Star Wars' at 8pm, please."
"Gerne. Vorne, mitte oder hinten?" = "Very well. In the front, the middle or the back of the cinema?"
"Wenn es geht, würde ich gerne in der Mitte sitzen." = "If it's possible, I would like to sit in the middle (horizontally spoken)."
"Einen Augenblick... da hätte ich höchstens in Reihe 12 noch etwas. Geht das in Ordnung?" = "One moment... the only possibility would be row 12. Is that ok?"
"Ja, in Ordnung." = "That's alright."

Translating movie names

As you may know, in Germany most cinemas and TV stations show the movies in a dubbed version. This also includes the titles of the movies which will often get a more or less fitting German name. So, sometimes you will find that it's hard to talk about movies with a German because he just doesn't know which movie you are talking about. (Thankfully, they snapped out of the habit to translate every movie title there is).

Here's a rough guide to some of the most famous flicks. I will give you the original name, the German title and how the German title translates back into English (if it's an English movie).

Jaws = Der weiße Hai = The white shark
Star Wars = Krieg der Sterne = War of the stars
Star Trek = Raumschiff Enterprise = Starship Enterprise
North by Northwest = Der unsichtbare Dritte = The invisible third

Antitrust = Startup = Startup
Tomorrow Never Dies = Der Morgen stirbt nie = The Tomorrow never dies

The Prisoner of Azkaban = Der Gefangene von Azkaban = The Prisoner of Azkaban

This applies to TV series too, of course:
