Finnish: how to tell the time

To ask the time, you can say:


Mitä kello on? - What is the time? (lit. What is the clock?)
Paljonko kello on? - What is the time? (lit. How much is the clock?)

When you're not sure if the person can tell you the time, it's more polite (and very common) to ask:

Onko sinulla/teillä kelloa? - Lit. Do you have a watch?
Mitäköhän kello on? - I wonder what the time is?

When asking a stranger, remember to begin your question with anteeksi ("excuse me").

To tell the time, you can say:


Kello on... - It is...

  • yksi. - 1:00.
  • puoli kaksi. - 1:30.
  • varttia yli kaksi. - 2:15.
  • varttia vaille kolme. - 2:45.
  • viittä yli kolme. - 3:05.
  • kymmentä vaille neljä. - 4:50.
  • kohta neljä. - 4 o'clock soon.
