Faroese relative pronouns

The relative pronoun shows at one or many words, which are mentioned earlier. They are:
sum and ið
They are not conjugated.
- Vit sóu ein film, sum var sera spennandi (We saw a film, that was very exciting)
- Tey møttu manninum og konuni, sum tey gistu hjá á ólavsøku (They met the man and the woman, whom they had stayed at during ólavsøka.)
- Marita drakk tað reina vatnið, ið var í koppinum. (Marita drank the clean water, which was in the cup.)
- Óli stóð og hugdi at bilunum og bussunum, ið stóðu á steðgiplássinum. (Óli stood and watched the cars and busses, which stood at the parking lot.)
There is no rule as to when to use sum and when to use ið.
It isn't always necessary to have sum or ið in the sentence:
- Tað var henni, (sum) hann fylgdist við. (It was her, (that) he walked with.)
- Hatta er tað býttasta, (ið) eg nakrantíð havi hoyrt. (That's the stupidest thing, (that) I've ever heard.)
