A pronoun is a word, used instead of other words, especially nouns, to avoid having to use the same words over and over again:

Instead of saying:

Jógvan og Rúna eru fimm ára gomul. Jógvan og Rúna spæla ofta saman. Jógvan og Rúna spæla krógva og blunda, og nú leitar Jógvan eftir Rúnu. Jógvan finnur Rúnu niðri við ánna. = Jógvan and Rúna are five years of age. Jógvan and Rúna often play together. Jógvan and Rúna play hide and seek, and now Jógvan is looking for Rúna. Jógvan finds Rúna down by the creek.

we can say:

Jógvan og Rúna eru fimm ára gomul. Tey spæla ofta saman. Tey spæla krógva og blunda, og nú leitar hann eftir henni. Hann finnur hana niðri við ánna. = Jógvan and Rúna are five years of age. They often play together. They play hide and seek and now he is looking for her. He finds her by the creek.

The words tey, hann, henni and hana are pronouns because they replace Jógvan and Rúna.

We divide the pronouns into seven groups: personal, reflexive, possesive, demonstrative, relative, interrogative and indefinite.

All pronouns, except the relative and some possesive, are conjugated in numbers, cases and genders.
