The noun is the name of an object, living or dead, e.g. maður, kona, hundur, grót, seyður, skip (man, woman, dog, rock, sheep, ship), but also things like our feelings have names: gleði, sorg, kærleiki, blídni, vreiði etc. (happiness, sorrow, love, hospitality, wrath)

The normal nouns are common names for all things of the same kind, examples drongur, genta, bygd, býur, ketta, lamb, bátur (boy, girl, village, town/city, cat, lamb, boat)
Proper nouns are used for something specific. Examples are people's names and place names: Beinta, Jógvan, Guðrun, Katrin, Ólavur, Mikkjal, Tórshavn, Vágur, Eysturoy, Nólsoy, Føroyar (last one: Faroe Islands)
Nouns are divided into three genders: kallkyn (masculine), kvennkyn (feminine) and hvørkikyn (neuter).
Masculine are all the words, that we can say hann or teir about (he and they)
Feminine are all the words, that we can say hon or tær about (she and they)
Neuter are all the words, that we can say tað or tey about (it and they)
Nouns are conjugated in numbers: eintal (singular) and fleirtal (plural)
Nouns are also conjugated in cases: hvørfall, hvønnfall, hvørjumfall, hvørsfall (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive)
Nouns are either indefinite or definite.
Óbundin (indefinite) are the nouns, when you're not speaking of anything specific, but anyone: ein drongur, ein genta, eitt barn (a boy, a girl, a child)
Bundin (definite) are the nouns, when you're speaking of something specific: drongurin, gentan, barnið (the boy, the girl, the child)
Nouns are also conjugated by the two main conjugations: the strong and the weak conjugation.
Strongly conjugated nouns end with a consonant in singurlar genitive.
Weakly conjugated nouns end with a vowel in all cases in singular.
All nouns end with -um in plural dative.
All nouns end with -a in plural genitive.
