Faroese adverbs

We can ask: Hvar er hon? = Where is she?
And answer: Hon er har. = She is there.

We can ask: Nær fer hann? = When will he leave/go?
And answer: Hann fer . = He leaves/goes now.

We can ask: Hvussu livir barnið? = How is the child?
And answer: Barnið livir væl. = The child is well.

These words, har, nú and væl are adverbs.

Adverbs are words that are preceded by verbs, as in the examples above, as adjectives, prepositions and others to make a more detailed explanation.

  • when something happens: Eg fari tíðliga upp. = I go up early.
  • where something is: Bólturin er her. = The ball is here.
  • where something is taking place: Fundurin var har inni. = The meeting was in there.
  • where something is going: Hann fór hagar. = He went thither.
  • how something is: Skipið er óføra stórt. = This ship is very big.
  • how something happens: Óhappið hendi knappliga = The accident happened suddenly.
  • why something is happening: fór hann avstað. = That is why he left.
  • when estimating: Hon dugir ivaleyst betur enn hann. = She is without doubt more cunning than he is.
  • acception: Jú, eg komi. = Yes, I will come.
  • denial: Nei, ikki fert tú. = No, you will not go.

Some adverbs are declined, but only in steps.

We divide the adverbs into six groups:
