Exceptions to -aat words being Neuter in Dutch

Exceptions being feminine

Watch out for:

  • words refering to female persons

Exceptions:

  • disguised latin (-a) loan words: Vulgaat, bracteaat, labiaat, affricaat, aspiraat, plaat, straat
  • tomaat, graat, raat, vaat, ordinaat, lemniscaat

Exceptions being masculine

Watch out for:

  • words refering to male persons. acrobaat, magistraat, vraat
  • verb stems. haat, doorlaat, aflaat, praat, baat

Exceptions:

  • disguised latin loan words (-us). hiaat, dukaat, oleaat, senaat, isobaat, bataat, vertebraat, staat
  • automaat (also: giromaat)
  • spagaat, passaat, coördinaat, geminaat, poelepetaat, anastigmaat, aplanaat

Special stuff

  • agaat:
    • neuter: the sort of stone that you dig out of the ground or whatever
    • masculine: the product after working on it
  • muskaat:
    • masculine: the wine
    • feminine: the fruit
  • maat:
    • masculine: comrade
    • feminine: measurement
  • granaat:
    • masculine: the tree, the gem
    • feminine: the apple, grenade
    • neuter: the minerals you dig out, and out of those the most dark red ones are gems (de granaat)
