A pronoun is a word, used instead of other words, especially nouns, to avoid having to use the same words over and over again.

Instead of saying:

Eirk og Anna irå sjaks ár gambluñ. Eirk og Anna l[aelig´]ka mikið åf í lag. Eirk og Anna spjenna báll, og nú kýtir Eirk ettir Annu. Eirk nár Annu niðvið ániña.
Eric and Anna are six years old. Eric and Anna often play together. Eric and Anna play football, and now Eric is running for Anna. Eric reaches Anna down by the river.

we can say:

Eirk og Anna irå sjaks ár gambluñ. Þeir l[aelig´]ka mikið åf í lag. Þeir spjenna báll, og nú kýtir han ettir henner. Han nár hána niðvið ániña.
Eric and Anna are six years old. They often play together. They play football, and now he is running for her. He reaches her down by the river.

The words þeir, han, henner and hána are pronouns because they replace Eirk and Anna.
We divide the pronouns into seven groups: personal, reflexive, possesive, demonstrative, relative, interrogative and indefinite.
All pronouns, except the relative, are conjugated in numbers, cases and genders.
