The Chadic language family includes over one hundred languages, spoken in west Africa south of the Sahara. The best known is Hausa, with some fifty million speakers. Although recognisably Hamito-Semitic, these languages have adopted the areal feature of tone distinctions. Many have developed other atypical features, like Margi with over eighty consonants and only two vowels.
