Like in most Romance languages, articles are declined in gender (feminine/masculine) and number (singular/plural).
Nouns always need a determiner, i.e. a number, demonstrative pronoun, article or something like that. It can't stand alone as in some English expressions.

Definite Articles
The forms with an apostrophe are used before words starting with a vowel or a silent H.

"Salat" definite articles
It's a relic of Old Catalan still used in the dialects spoken in the Balearic islands and some areas of the province of Girona instead of the standard definite articles.
