Bulgarian grammar: Verb: Aspect

From UniLang Wiki

Each Bulgarian verb has an inherent aspect. This is the case in all Slavic languages. The aspect can be either perfective or imperfective and understanding the difference could be tricky if your native language does not possess a similar distinction. Roughly speaking an imperfective verb describes an action without referring to its beginning or completion, while a perfective one has a connotation of completing or achieving something. For example the English verbs ‘to sleep’ and to ‘to fall asleep’ denote an imperfective and a perfective action respectively. Often in Bulgarian да + perfective verb corresponds to English to + infinitive, while да + imperfective verb corresponds to to + be + <verb>-ing. E.g.

намирам, to find (imperfective)
намерÑ?, to find (perfective)

ИÑ?кам да намерÑ? = I want to find
ИÑ?кам да намирам = I want to be finding

NB: Perfective verbs in the present can be used ONLY AFTER THE да PARTICLE. No exceptions.

There are ways to make an imperfective verb out of a perfective one and vice versa.
