Breton
From UniLang Wiki
Breton is a celtic language spoken in the region of Bretagne in France. Breton like all regional languages spoken in France had been banned for nearly a century from public school. The aim of this restictive measure was to seal the french republic's unity through the use of french language for better communication and knowledge with mandatory mass education of children. At this time children were punished for speaking local languages as known as patois.
After this restriction, as the understanding of classic french was assumed, regional languages like Breton, Basque, Occitan, Corsican ... were authorized at school and developed through private and public initiative : Enseignement des langues regionales in the begining of 1980.
Today Breton is taught in bilingual schools - Diwan - and spread through folk music and festival - festival interceltique de Lorient - A new Television called TV Breizh appeared recently in 2002 showing the Breton language's dynamism.
