Azeri has 6 formal noun cases, each with its characteristic ending:
Nominative (zero ending)
Accusative (or definite direct object case) -(s)ı
Genitive -(n)ın
Dative -(y)a
Locative -da
Ablative -dan
Functions of the cases:
Nominative:
1. Subject:
Uşaq oynayır - "the child plays"
2. Indefinite or generic direct object:
Uşaq kitab oxuyur - "the child reads a book" (or "books")
Accusative:
1. *Definite* direct objects:
Uşaq kitabı oxuyur - "the child reads *the* book"
Genitive:
1. Possession:
Uşaq-ın kitab-ı "the child's book"
2. Other possessive type constructions:
Bugün ay-ın üç-ü-dür "today is the third [day] of the month" (lit. the month's third")
Locative:
1. The indirect object:
O, alma mənə verdi - "He gave me an apple"
Qadına zəng vurdum - "I phoned (rang) the woman"
2. The subject of certain set phrases and impersonal constructions:
Bu film xoşum-a gəlir "I like this film" (lit. this film to-my-pleasure comes)
Locative:
1. Location of an object:
Kitab şkaf-da-dır - "the book is on the shelf"
O şəhərdə yaşayır - "he lives in the city"
