Armenian alphabet

Like the Latin or Greek alphabets, Armenian has both upper- and lowercase letters. It was invented in the 5th century CE by Mesrop Mashtots, and is ultimately based on the Greek alphabet.

Over time, some sounds have changed, e.g. Õ² was pronounced as a dark "l" (i.e. Å‚), but is now pronounced as "gh" (see below). Two letters, Õ•/Ö… and Õ–/Ö†, are later additions.

Ււvv This letter is not found initially. In Western practice (after all vowels except ո), v in vase; In Eastern practice, this letter is found only after ե, where it's pronounced v, and ո, where it forms the vowel u (see below). Where it followed a vowel other than ե or ո in Eastern Armenian, ւ has been replaced by վ.
