The Genitive case answers to the question words кого? and чего?.

Functions of the Genitive

The Genitive is used to show ownership or relationship.

Вот книга Марка.
Here is Mark's book (the book of Mark.)

The Genitive is also used:

to show possession
У него (есть) книга.
He has the book (at/by him (is) book.)
to show absence with нет
Здесь нет книги.
There isn't a book here.
