Prepositions of Location
The following prepositions are common in expressing position:
- a - at
- Estou sentado à mesa - I'm sitting at the table
- em - in/on/at
- Estou em casa - I am at home
- Estou no Brasil - I am in Brazil
- O livro está na mesa - The book is on the table
- ao longo [de] - along
- Caminho ao longo da rua - I walk along the street
- ao lado [de] - next [to]
- Estou ao lado da casa - I am next to the house
- em redor [de] - around
- Estou em redor da casa - I am around the house
- acima [de] / por cima [de] - above
- Estou acima da casa - I am above the house
- perto [de] - near
- Estou perto da casa - I am near the house
- debaixo [de] - under/below
- Estou debaixo da mesa - I am under the table
- à frente [de] - in front of
- Estou à frente da casa - I am in front of the house
- dentro [de] - in/inside

- antes [de] - before

- dentro [de] - in
- Vou ver o filme dentro de alguns minutos - I will see the movie in a few minutes

- Vou ver o filme depois de amanhã - I will see the movie after tomorrow

The use of the preposition de - a very common grammar mistake for the foreign learner
Many foreign speakers, when speaking Portuguese, make mistakes regarding the preposition de:
Do is a contraction of the preposition de (of) with the masculine definite article o.
Da is a contraction of the preposition de (of) with the feminine definite article a.
A common mistake is saying "Aprendiz do português". it would mean "Learner of the Portuguese". A native speaker of Portuguese would rather say "Aprendiz de português".
So, if you say "Homem da família" it will mean "man of the family". But if you say "Homem de família", it would mean "family man" (not a man of the family (a defined family), but a man of family).
Another example: if you say "soldado do brinquedo", it will mean "soldier of the toy", but if you say "soldado de brinquedo", it will mean "a toy soldier". It's a very big context meaning change.
The wrong use of "de", "do" or "da" can result in misunderstanding.
