straightforward translations

  • against = GEGEN + accusative
  • because of = WEGEN + genitive
  • besides = AUSSER + dative
  • by (for passive voice) = VON + dative
  • except = AUSSER + dative
  • for = FÜR + accusative
  • in spite of = TROTZ + genitive
  • instead of = STATT + genitive

topic, focus

  • talk about something/someone: ÜBER + accusative
    • Ich habe über meinen Hund gesprochen. = I talked about my dog.

reason

  • circumstance: BEI + dative
    • Bei seinen Schulden kann er sich das nicht leisten. = He can't afford that with his debts.
  • on someone's request or similar things: AUF + accusative
    • Auf Bitte seines Chefs ging er zu der Veranstaltung. = He went to that event on request of his boss.

attributes, explanation

  • made of a certain material: AUS + dative
    • Der Stuhl ist aus Holz. = The chair is made of wood.
  • judging someone: FÜR + accusative
    • Sie hält ihn für arrogant. = She considers him arrogant.
    • Sie hält ihn für einen Versager. = She takes him for a loser.

situation

  • someone's turn to do something: AN + dative
    • Ich bin an der Reihe. = It's my turn.
    • Es ist an dir, für die Getränke zu sorgen. = It's your job to get the drinks.


In spoken German, the dative case is often used instead of the genitive behind prepositions.
