German prepositions (alphabetical)

The cases are given here as (A) for accusative, (D) for dative and (G) for genitive.

Many spatial prepositions take the dative case when describing a location and the accusative when describing a direction. These are marked with (A/D).

In spoken German, the dative case is often used instead of the genitive behind prepositions.

ab (D)

• starting point of a movement from A to B
  • Ab München nehmen wir den Zug. = (First, we'll go by car.) Starting in Munich, we'll take the train.
• beginning of a period (in present or future)
  • Ich bin ab Montag nicht zu Hause. = I won't be at home from Monday onwards.

an (A/D)

• (A) sending something to someone
  • Ich schreibe einen Brief an meine Mutter. = I'm writing a letter to my mother.
• (A/D) near, close to something (also metaphorically)
  • Maria will an den Fluss / an die Grenze / ans Meer / an den Strand / ans Telefon. = Mary wants to go to the river/border/sea/beach/telephone.
• (A/D) at places like stations or airports or schools mentioned by name
  • Susi studiert an der Uni Bochum. = Sue studies at the University of Bochum.
  • Ich bin am / auf dem Flughafen. = I'm at the airport.
• (D) at a specific time of the day
  • am Morgen/Abend, am Mittag = in the morning/evening, at noon
  • but: um Mitternacht, in der Nacht = at midnight, in the night
• (D) at a specific date
  • am 19. April, an Silvester = on April 19th, on New Year's Eve
• (D) someone's turn to do something
  • Ich bin an der Reihe. = It's my turn.
  • Es ist an dir, für die Getränke zu sorgen. = It's your job to get the drinks.

auf (A/D)

• (A/D) on top of something
  • This is also used for islands and ships.
  • Wir sind auf dem Schiff / auf Rügen / auf dem / auf einem Bauernhof. = We're on the ship / on Rügen Island / on a farm.
• (A/D) at places like stations or airports or schools mentioned by name
  • Wir gehen auf das Albert-Einstein-Gymasium. = We visit Albert Einstein High School.
  • Ich bin am / auf dem Flughafen. = I'm at the airport.
• (A) on someone's request etc.
  • Auf Bitte seines Chefs ging er zu der Veranstaltung. = He went to that event on request of his boss.
• (A) to respect/consider something
  • Du nimmst keine Rücksicht auf die Gefühle anderer. = You have no respect for other people's feelings.

aus (D)

• space: out of
• from a country or region
  • aus Asien/Deutschland/Burgund/Moskau = from Asia/Germany/Burgundy/Moscow
  • aus den USA / aus der Schweiz / aus dem Westerwald / aus dem Fichtelgebirge = from the US / from Switzerland/Westerwald/Fichtelgebirge
• the material something is made of
  • Der Stuhl ist aus Holz. = The chair is made of wood.

außer (D)

• besides, except

bei (D)

• at someone's place, at a specific store
  • Hans ist bei seiner Freundin. = John is with his (girl-)friend.
  • Bei Aldi gibt es diese Woche wieder PCs. = Aldi [a cheap supermarket chain] has PCs again this week.
• at the same time
  • Bei Abfahrt des Zuges standen wir noch im Stau. = We were still in the traffic jam when the train departed.
• explaining circumstance
  • Bei seinen Schulden kann er sich das nicht leisten. = He can't afford that with his debts.

bis / bis zu (D)

• end point of a movement from A to B
• end of a time period
  • Wir bleiben bis zum 7. Februar / bis August / bis zum Schluss. = We'll stay until February 7th / until August / until the end.

durch (A)

• space: through

für (A)

• for
• valid for a period of time
  • Der Ausweis gilt für 5 Jahre. = The ID card is valid for 5 years.
• judging someone
  • Sie hält ihn für arrogant. = She considers him arrogant.
  • Sie hält ihn für einen Versager. = She takes him for a loser.
• to make an appointment for a specific date/time
  • Sie verabredeten sich für 20 Uhr. = They arranged to meet at 8 pm.

gegen (A)

• around a specific hour or time of the day (approximately)
  • gegen 2 Uhr, gegen Mittag/Mitternacht, gegen Abend = around 2 o'clock, around noon/midnight around the evening
• against

in (A/D)

• (A/D) located in a country, region, city, etc.
  • in Asien/Deutschland/Burgund/Moskau = in Asia/Germany/Burgundy/Moscow
  • in den USA / in der Schweiz / im Westerwald / im Fichtelgebirge = in the US / in Switzerland/Westerwald/Provence/Fichtelgebirge
• (A/D) going to a country or region (with a definite article)
  • in die USA / in die Schweiz / in den Westerwald / ins Fichtelgebirge = to the US / to Switzerland/Westerwald/Fichtelgebirge
• (A/D) inside something, especially buildings
  • This is also used for words like Land (country/state) and Stadt (city/town).
  • Sie geht in die Stadt / ins Kino / ins Büro. = She goes to town / to the movies / to the office.
• (D) in a specific month
  • im nächsten April, im Februar 1983 = next April, in February 1983

• nach Hause = home (direction)
  • Wir gehen bald nach Hause. = We're going home soon.
• going to a country, region, city etc. (without an article)
  • nach Asien/Deutschland/Burgund/Moskau = to Asia/Germany/Burgundy/Moscow
• nach links/rechts = to the left/right
• time: after or not before
  • Ich stehe erst nach 8 Uhr auf. = I don't get up before 8 o'clock.
  • Nach dem Zähneputzen gehe ich ins Bett. = I go to bed after brushing my teeth.

  • Ich komme gerade von Maria. = I'm coming from Mary's place.
  • Morgen fahre ich von Hamburg nach Berlin. = Tomorrow I'm going from Hamburg to Berlin.
  • Du gehst von deiner Schwester zu deiner Tante. = You go from your sister's place to your aunt's.
• to the left/right of

  • vor drei Jahren = three years ago
• (D) time: before
  • Vor 8 Uhr schlafe ich noch. = I still sleep before 8 o'clock.
  • Vor dem Schlafengehen Zähneputzen nicht vergessen! = Don't forget to brush your teeth before going to bed.
• (D) to be afraid of something
  • Maria hat keine Angst vor Spinnen. = Mary is not afraid of spiders.

während (G)

• time: during, while
  • Während der Vorstellung aßen wir Popcorn. = We ate popcorn during the presentation

wegen (G)

• because of

zu (D)

• going to someone's place, to a specific store
  • Gehen wir zu dir oder zu mir? = Are we going to your place or mine?
• zu Hause = at home (location)
• used after the preposition bis
  • Bis zum Ziel sind es 42 km. = It's 42 km to the finish.
  • Wir bleiben bis zum 7. Februar / bis August / bis zum Schluss. = We'll stay until February 7th / until August / until the end.
