French Present Tense

In French only one present tense is known, Le Présent. This covers the Present Simple and the Present Progressive (Continuous). The Present Perfect, however, would rather be translated as the Passé Composé, one of the Past tenses. The Présent is used whenever you want to express something happening in the present, no matter what kind of action, or at what specific present time.

Regular Verbs

Ending on -er

  Conjugation Example
Je -e danse
Tu -es danses
Il/elle/on -e danse
Nous -ons dansons
Vous -ez dansez
Ils/elles -ent dansent


Ending on -re

  Conjugation Example
Je -s perds
Tu -s perds
Il/elle/on - *nothing* perd
Nous -ons perdons
Vous -ez perdez
Ils/elles -ent perdent


Ending on -ir

  Conjugation Example
Je -is finis
Tu -is finis
Il/elle/on -it finit
Nous -issons finissons
Vous -issez finissez
Ils/elles -issent finissent
