The verb tells, what is being done, or what's going on:

Krippen spilær, ('The child plays')
Pojken stóð þar, ('The boy stood there')
Bljommin veksir, ('The flower grows')

They are different from other word classes by the fact,

that they can be conjugated in tenses: present, past, etc.

The verb til spilå [tI spI'l\O] ('to play') is:

in present: spilær
in past: spilæð

Verbs can be classified in moods and passives, they are conjugated in tenses, numbers and persons, and they can be classified as verbs with soundchanges and verbs without soundchanges. They also use weak and strong conjugations.<p>

Verbs are, as mentioned above conjugated in persons and numbers. There are three persons: 1st, 2nd and 3rd person. There are two numbers singular and plural. <p>

Examples:<p>

til skreifa ('to write')

1st pers. ig skreifir ig skreifði
2nd pers. þu skreifir þu skreifði
3rd pers. (m) han skreifir han skreifði
3rd pers. (f) hoñ skreifir hoñ skreifði
3rd pers. (n) heð skreifir heð skreifði
Plur.
1st pers. vįð skreifum vįð skreifðum
2nd pers. ið skreifið ið skreifðið
3rd pers. þeir skreifa þeir skreifði


til leså ('to read')

1st pers. ig les ig las
2nd pers. þu les þu las
3rd pers. (m) han les han las
3rd pers. (f) hoñ les hoñ las
3rd pers. (n) heð les heð las
Plur.
1st pers. vįð lesum vįð lasum
2nd pers. ið lesið ið lasið
3rd pers. þeir leså þeir lasu


When conjugating verbs in general, we use:

til + infinitive -
ig + 1st person present singular -
ig + 1st person past singular -
vįð + 1st person past plural -
ig hafr + past participle

til skreifa - ig skreifir - ig skreifði - vįð skreifðum - ig hafr skreift
til leså - ig les - ig las - vįð lasu - ig hafr lesið
