Belarussian has undergone great changes in the 1930s due to the Soviets. Many Russian words have been introduced since. After the independency from the Soviet Union Belarussian was recognized as the primary official language again. However, currently Russian again is primarily used as official language and what is called now Belarussian is often a mix of old Belarussian and modern Russian.

Before 1930, actually from about 1918 to the 1930s, it was tried to modernize Belarussian. Right now some intellectual Belarussians try to proceed with these efforts, despite the main stream primarily using Russian again.

Belarussian minorities exist primarily in Poland near Bialystok.

Mainly Cyrillic is used to write Belarussian, but also the Latin transliterations are in use. The transliteration follows Polish.
