Auxiliary verb

An auxiliary verb is a helper verb which accompanies the main verb of a phrase.

Examples (English):

  • Tom had eaten lunch earlier.
  • Tom will sail on the lake.

In the first example, the auxiliary verb had is used to form the pluperfect (or past perfect) tense. In the second example, the auxiliary verb will is used to form the future tense.

Examples (Castillian):

  • Carlos ha tenido que trabajar.

In this example, the auxiliary verb haber is used to form the pluperfect (or past perfect) tense.
