Armenian alphabet

Like the Latin or Greek alphabets, Armenian has both upper- and lowercase letters. It was invented in the 5th century CE by Mesrop Mashtots, and is ultimately based on the Greek alphabet.

Over time, some sounds have changed, e.g. ղ was pronounced as a dark "l" (i.e. ł), but is now pronounced as "gh" (see below). Two letters, Օ/օ and Ֆ/ֆ, are later additions.
