Introduction to Bahasa Indonesia
Indonesian is the official language of the Republic of Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago. The language itself is based on Malay, which is spoken in neighboring Malaysia. On the 28th of October, 1928, Indonesian youths declared Bahasa Indonesia as the unifying language. Before, each indonesian ethnic group had their own language. Today, knowledge of this language will serve you well all around Indonesia.
An important note: a lot of people refer to the Indonesian language as "bahasa". This is totally incorrect. The word "bahasa" simply means language, and sentences like "Do you speak bahasa?" have no meaning.
