To become a member, you have to fulfil a few conditions, these conditions also show you what membership of the UniLang Community is all about.
Note that UniLang Community Membership is totally free and available for anyone who meets the following conditions:
1) First of all, you need to have a certain interest towards
language, or at least towards any aspect of language (this is quite obvious). You don't have to be an expert on linguistics, a professional translator or a student of American literature. If you look at languages, culture, or communication as a hobby, you're equally welcome.
2) Another thing we require from our members is that they are active. This means you have to check in regularly (about once a week at least) (via the forum, chat, mail or any other way). Members who mysteriously seem to have disappeared (i.e. who don't report themselves for a very long time without any reason) will automatically lose their membership status. We do this because we want to make sure our memberlist consists of
real members (ones you can count on), and not just of a bunch of hollow, meaningless names. Of course, we are not that strict in
this rule. If it occasionally takes you a bit longer than a week to check in, no problem. If you let us know you can't access the internet for 2 or 3 weeks, no problem. But we do mind if you stay away for a month without letting us know why. Another thing we'd like to see is initiative, don't be afraid to come with your ideas etc... after all, UniLang is what it's members make it to be...so initiative is a must!
3) Thirdly, you have to be prepared to help your fellow members if possible. We don't ask you to move heaven & earth for another member, we
only ask you to make a small effort now and then if it can help a fellow member. You would be pleased too if someone helped you out with a problem. E.g. if a fellow member has a question concerning your native
language, country or culture, it's only normal that you make a little effort to answer it. Or if someone needs help with a problem he just can't solve on his own, we'd appreciate it if you assisted him if possible. You can also actively participate in any of our allied projects (such
as Languages Made Clear).
